About The Band
Brad Handzel
Brad is one of the founders of The Surf
City Slackers. He has fond memories of being the studio ukulele player for
The Band on their legendary recording Music From Big Pink and other Band
albums. Listen closely and you'll hear the sweet sound of Brad's ukulele.
Brad is glad to be off the road and
playing in Santa Cruz at small gigs for his friends. He now devotes
himself to his music and surfing.
Michael (omuku) McGee
Michael’s musical
interest stemmed from his decision
to take a semester off college in
1971 to visit Maui (he never did get the damn degree). He left paradise ten
years later after chasing waves, women, and music all over the island.
While on Maui his surf buddies introduced him to playing guitar. They were
much better surfers than musicians but what better thing to do when the surf
was flat? Now, after a few years of playing mostly ukulele, the Slackers
have been an inspiration to him to start playing guitar again.
His desire
to always be near the ocean brought him to Santa Cruz and he now resides in
Aptos above Pot Belly Beach with his “Wonder Wife”, Norma Jean.
Blandy Merrill
Blandy started playing the ukulele at age
11. Her primary instrument now is the banjo uke. In time her interests were directed
towards playing the tenor banjo before she took up the guitar. The last 3
years have found her back playing the ukulele. Her comment on coming
full-circle musically is, “less strings mean less ego”.
Our songstress has played in garage bands
from Santa Fe, N.M. to Winters, CA. She had an unsuccessful audition with
The Cheap Suit Serenaders. Blandy says, “I play the ukulele because I need
to sing”.
Chris Basiletti
Chris started playing guitar at age 13 and like many
teenagers played in a garage band in the 60's. His musical odyssey
included playing folk, acoustic fingerstyle and classical guitar. After
totally laying off guitar for about 20 years, he started playing again in
2001. Shortly after that the Surf City Slackers was born when Brad convinced
Chris to play at a party with no rehearsal. Chris left the area for a
few years to enjoy life in the country and further hone his guitar skills.
Now he's glad to be back with the band.
